A PIONEERING new group has been set up in Tavistock with the aim of establishing a strong local economy to enable everyone to cope with the twin challenges of global warming and dwindling oil supplies, in a sustainable way.
The Transition Tavistock steering group, formed in January, has been planning projects and events to take place in the town and surrounding area to raise awareness of the effect unstable weather patterns, food shortages and rising energy prices will have on local people.
Transition Tavistock steering group is also looking at the benefits that strong social networks, communal food growing and renewable energy projects would bring, including a better quality of life.
A spokesperson for the group said: ‘The group would like to engage schools, residents and businesses, in planning projects and activities to reach this goal and would very much appreciate ideas and offers of involvement in setting up working groups.
‘Young people, say, between the ages of 16 to 25, are especially welcome, and they are some of the people who will particularly benefit from a more rewarding, secure and enjoyable low carbon future.’
Transition Tavistock will have an information stall at the farmers’ market in Bedford Square this Saturday, May 9.
