China may take the lead in green technology

16-11-2009

On the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific summit, participants at a business forum were enthusiastic about China’s green path that creates economic opportunities and may provide millions of jobs for its people.

If China carries out crucial energy and ecological reforms, China may become the world's top exporter of "green technology", AFP reports, quoting an international environmental campaigner.

"For China, I am absolutely convinced that it will become the world leader in green tech... I think that China is in a position where, as manufacturer to the world, if it goes down that green energy route, it will open up enormous new markets," Tim Flannery, chairman of the Copenhagen Climate Council, told a business forum on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific summit.

Business forum participants also complimented China for seeing the potential in green economy.

"They realize that this is really an economic opportunity that will provide millions of jobs for its people," US Commerce Secretary Gary Locke said, according to AFP.

China has launched several large green projects. "Green Wall of China" is a series of human-planted forest strips that may spur reforestation, energy efficiency and renewable energy development.

In May, China announced a stimulus package worth 440 billion dollars to expand its renewable energy use, and the country has set a goal to cut energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product by 20 percent and pollution by 10 percent by 2010 from 2005 levels, AFP reports.
