Rock music as leading indicator of peak oil

If you think music has been downhill since the 1960s, consider this chart.

Some over-smart people at Overthinkingit.com offer evidence that rock music is a leading indicator of peak oil. The chart plots the release date for songs in Rolling Stone magazine's list of top 500 rock songs against U.S. Lower 48 oil field production.

Peak Oil and Peak Rock Music

Peak Oil and Peak Rock Music

Perhaps it's a coincidence that U.S. rock music peaked in 1965, with the Rolling Stones singing Satisfaction, just five years before the U.S. could no longer satisfy growing demand for fuel. Or maybe it's fate that U.S. production peaked in 1970, and a year later, Marvin Gaye asked What's Going On?

We can all take issue with the rock music list. (Since when was Patsy Cline a rock musician? And if she's on the list, where's Stevie Ray Vaughan?) But maybe energy experts should consider viewing oil production through the lens of the magazine's No. 1 song of all time: Like a Rolling Stone.
