Energy saving measures have been unveiled by Facebook in a bid to make its data centres more efficient and to save money.
Amir Michael, an engineer at the social networking site announced the news at a technology lecture in Palo Alto, California, noting that it would echo a similar scheme put in place by his former employer Google.
Using the search engine giant's methods, Mr Michael explained Facebook could use a 12V battery as an alternative uninterruptible power supply (UPS) for its servers.
This would enable it to slash its levels of energy loss from 35 per cent to 15 per cent, he added.
As well as the energy saving benefits which it would offer, he said the scheme could also lead to major savings on equipment costs.
James Cole, director of data centre designer Keysource claimed the UPS "normally contributes to around five to ten per cent of the energy wastage of a data centre".
