Peak Oil: No Joke!

Fans of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart will be familiar with British comedian John Oliver, while British readers may also know his sidekick Andy Zaltman, who together have created a weekly audio podcast called The Bugle, in which they provide a comedic, often bawdy and satirical, perspective on the news of the day.

In this edition of The Bugle they note IEA's issuance of its 2009 World Energy Outlook that forecasts the production peak of conventional oil in 2020, pointing out that this is somewhat worrisome because it's within the lifetime of people alive today.

Besides the IEA report in November, December 16th marks the fourth anniversary of Dr. Kenneth Deffeyes' 2005 "peak oil" date, the point at which he forecast that production of conventional petroleum reached it maximum sustainability. It appears that essentially he has been correct. Conventional oil production appears to have plateaued around 85-87 million barrels a day since 2005.
