BEIJING, April 9 (Bernama) -- Dewan Negara president Datuk Wong Foon Meng has asked Malaysian companies to partner with Chinese technology firms to tap in new and advanced technology in the green and ICT industry sectors.

Wong said he was informed that there were quite a number of Chinese technology companies that owned some of the advanced homegrown technologies in the two sectors.

Through partnership and joint efforts in research and development, Malaysian companies would be able to aquire the expertise, he said.

"These Chinese companies can even help Malaysia utilise some of the advanced equipment invented in China," said Wong when summing up his four-day visit to China ending today. Wong had led a delegation of Malaysian senators to China.

Wong said as Malaysia was encouraging green technolgy, "we should give emphasis and focus on modern and new approaches".

The Malaysian Government had made financial allocations in the 2010 Budget to promote green technology development.

He said Chinese technology company like Huawei Technologies was keen to work with Malaysian companies in energy-saving devices and construction material using green technology.

Wong visited Huawei Technologies here yesterday before meeting the National People's Congress chairman Wu Bangguo at the Great Hall of the People.

Huawei Technologies Malaysia Sdn Bhd, an ICT and solutions company, had set up its office in Malaysia. It posted a turnover of US$383 million last year.

Wong said many Chinese companies engaged in the hi-tech, heavy industries, oil and gas sectors were keen to invest in Sabah and Sarawak.

"So far, one company has entered into a joint venture with a Malaysian company to set up a steel plant in Peninsular Malaysia while others are considering investing in Sabah and Sarawak," said Wong.

On the visit, Wong said it was fruitful and beneficial.

He said China agreed that both the legislatures should have closer relations and have regular visits by legislators of the two friendly nations.

"We hope the legislators of both countries will not only confine their focus on parliament matters but also go beyond to promote trade, tourism, education, culture and other sectors of mutual concern," he added.
