Oil boom resurrects North Dakota ghost town

12-05-2012

On the desolate plains of North Dakota, an old ghost town has been reborn as a hub of oil activity, and it may not be the last abandoned settlement to be resurrected from the dust.

The village of Dore was all but deserted by the mid-1970s. But the region's oil boom and a scarcity of housing have brought a frenzy of new activity. Oil rigs drill in the distance, and mile-long tanker trains are topped off with crude before heading to market. Dozens of campers and trailers have popped up, too.

The superintendent of the state historical society says other ghost towns in the oil patch may come back to life as workers try to find places to live. But, he added, "it's anybody's guess how permanent it will be."
