136: Gas Reserves - key insights

29-12-2013

All regions have seen large increase in gas reserves from 1980 to present day.

The US gas reserves have been sky-rocketing after shale-gas deposit started to be developed around 2005 with acceleration in Texas and North Dakota as focus areas to present day. This has drive gas prices down from $12/mmbtu in 2008 to $3/mmbtu in 2013 - helping families and industry keep prices down.

The UK has its own severe challenges as gas reserves have collapsed from 1.25 TCM in 1999 to 0.23 TCM in 2012 - not helped by three successive tax rises causing a large drop in investment in the gas basins of the UK North Sea. This has fed through to higher gas prices.
